MSI Utilities Develops $3.1 million Energy Efficiency Project for The University of Northwestern Ohio

UNOH to save $400K per year in energy costs

Procurement in addition to LED, HVAC and Water Management Service Contract

Dublin Ohio, 12/2022
– MSI Utilities collaborates with Energy Services Company partner (ESCO) Centrica Business Solutions to develop and improve energy efficiency for Lima Ohio’s, University of Northwestern Ohio.  MSI Utilities began by analyzing and managing UNOH energy procurement agreements, which moved to discussions about efficiency improvements needed on campus starting with an LED retrofit.  The conversation naturally shifted to HVAC replacements, HVAC motor upgrades, new water upgrades and controls throughout the campus.

MSI Strategic Business Consultant Ray Eversole collaborated with the MSI team to identify the best approach for the university’s needs and agreed that Centrica Business Solutions presented the most comprehensive approach to the project, lowering energy usage while upgrading the look and performance of multiple systems.  Prior to decisions, we considered several options for finance and construction, including a solar PPA and individual energy efficiency upgrades, but the Energy Services Agreement was best for the customer’s needs and bottom line.

Jim Bronder, CFO of UNOH, (Letter of Recommendation) was impressed by the initial impact of the energy management approach provided by MSI, initially saving the university $150K on energy purchase.   The final study was presented for energy efficiency projects, which extended energy savings to over $400,000 per year.

Mr. Bronder Noted, “From a financial standpoint, being able to pay for critical new equipment and facility upgrades from energy and water savings is a big win-win for us and allows us to remain laser-focused on providing our students, both current and future, with a world-class education.”

The audited energy efficiency and contract improvements provides benefits on many levels including:

  • Decarbonization benefits expected to reduce annual emissions of CO2 by 957 metric tons.
  • Electric savings of 1,941,582 kWh each year – equivalent to powering 278 homes.
  • Water savings of 7,366,000 gallons are also expected to be achieved annually.

The maintenance project effects the entire campus and spans across all academic, residential, athletic, retail and staff buildings.
